Internships provide an opportunity and encouragement for young people, interested in dairy goats as an occupation, to gain experience in goat farming and cheese making from the ground up. Paying the intern a stipend for one or two days work each week gives the intern an opportunity, over a period of several months, to determine if this an experience that they would like to continue. As a former criminal justice professor at Washburn University, one of my assignments was intern supervision, so it is not an unfamiliar concept to me.
and, structured correctly, internships work well for all concerned. Our first farm intern started with us in early September 2012 and is now a regular part-time employee in our dairy, fully oriented about all procedures, from cheese making through sales and deliveries & local vendor showcase events.
With the growth of our dairy and cheese business we need quality help but are not always able to use or pay a full time person. So the internship process enables an interested person to grow into the occupation as our farm needs grow.
Kristin Claire Werner, Lawrence, Kansas, is our new Intern. In the attached photos, Sue and Kristin, are going over some of the procedures in the cheese room. Kristin will spend her internship learning all aspects of our Grade A Goat Dairy, from pasture to plate, including cheese making. Kristin's familiarization and primary responsibilities will be helping to manage the dairy herd and the dairy parlor with the goal of increasing efficiency and maximizing production. Kristin is a graduate of Kansas University & has Micro Dairy experience. We feel fortunate to find such well qualified assistants and we are looking forward to having her to help with fall breeding and spring kidding & eventually giving us a break a couple of days a week in the milk parlor. Kristin will also represent us in Local Vendor Showcase Events. This enthusiastic young person has demonstrated that she is not afraid of work.
